À propos de Pamela Colman Smith
Elle est née le 16 février 1878, à Middlesex, en Angleterre, de parents américains. Ses années d'enfance se sont déroulées entre Londres, New York et Kingston, en Jamaïque. Adolescente, elle a voyagé à travers l'Angleterre avec la compagnie théâtrale d'Ellen Terry et Henry Irving. Par la suite, elle a commencé une formation artistique formelle au Pratt Institute de Brooklyn, dont elle est sortie diplômée en 1897. Bien qu'américaine de naissance, elle est retournée en Angleterre, où elle est devenue conceptrice théâtrale pour le théâtre miniature et illustratrice – principalement de livres, de brochures et d'affiches.
Vers 1903, elle rejoint l'Ordre de la Golden Dawn. En 1909, sous la direction d'Arthur Edward Waite, elle entreprend une série de soixante-dix-huit peintures allégoriques décrites par Waite comme un jeu de tarot rectifié.
Les dessins, publiés la même année par William Rider and Son, illustrent le mysticisme, le rituel, l'imagination, la fantaisie et les émotions profondes de l'artiste.
