Renowned natural perfumer and cultural curator Mandy Aftel has created this magical oracle deck from the Symbolorum et Emblematum of Joachim Camerarius, an emblem book originally published more than four centuries ago. Each card features a single emblem from Camerarius’s book: an allegorical engraving—beautifully hand-tinted in watercolor by Aftel—together with a motto and a couplet illuminating the moral of the engraving. In a companion guidebook, Aftel explores the layered meanings of each emblem, combining her own insights with the ancient wisdom compiled by Camerarius. Drawing on her expertise as a perfumer, she also suggests scent pairings for the emblems, for those who wish to deepen their divination with a multisensory experience.
The rich symbolism of these emblems—long-lost cousins of the tarot—take us back to an enchanted view of nature in which human lives were intertwined with plants and animals, the moon and the stars.
