Kristoffer Hughes is a native of Wales, Chief of the Anglesey Druid Order and also a member of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids — putting him in a knowledgeable and prime position to have developed a tarot deck steeped in Celtic tradition and mythology. The Celtic Tarot focuses on the Welsh branch of Celtic mythology. This fully illustrated 78-card tarot features 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana divided into four suits — Wands, Cauldrons, Shields, and Swords. Several Major Arcana have been renamed to honour Celtic tradition: The Empress becomes The Mother, The Emperor becomes The Father, The Hierophant becomes The Druid, The Hermit becomes The Merlin, Temperance becomes Equilibrium, The Devil becomes The Shadow, and Judgement becomes Rebirth.
Artist Chris Down has used a broad, natural palette that imbues his illustrations with a glowing, otherworldly quality — deep blues, rich teals, luminous aquatic blue, forest green, with highlights of fiery orange, purple, and golden yellow. The artwork reaches to the edge of the cards with no borders, and the deck comes packaged in a solid magnetic-clasp box with a 328-page companion guidebook.
