To burn Natural Black Copal Resin, you will need a heat-safe censer or resin burner, a self-lighting charcoal disk, and a pair of tongs. Light the charcoal disk using tongs — never hold it with your bare hands, as it gets extremely hot and will continue to heat up after the initial spark. Once the disk is fully lit and glowing (usually within 30–60 seconds), place it securely in your censer and allow it to ash over slightly before adding your resin. Then place a small fragment of black copal directly onto the charcoal and allow it to begin releasing its smoke. Always burn resin incense in a well-ventilated room, on a stable, heat-resistant surface, and never leave it unattended. Keep it well out of reach of children and pets, and make sure there are no flammable materials nearby.
For everyday use, a small piece of resin goes a long way. Start with a fragment roughly the size of a pea and add more as needed — black copal produces a rich, dense smoke that will fill a room fairly quickly. If you are burning it to shift the energy in your space or reset the atmosphere after stress, tension, or heavy emotion, move the censer slowly around the room, paying attention to corners, doorways, and areas that feel heavy or stagnant. For meditation, simply place the burning censer nearby before you settle in. You can also place raw fragments in a small dish on your altar as a constant, gentle presence — without burning them — to keep your sacred space feeling anchored and intentional.
