To begin working with The Mahabharata Oracle, hold the deck in your hands for a moment and bring your focus to a question or intention you have in mind. When you are ready to shuffle, choose whichever method feels most comfortable. The overhand shuffle works well for thicker card stock — simply transfer small packets of cards from one hand to the other repeatedly. The cut method is another simple option: divide the deck into two or three piles and reassemble them in a different order. If the cards allow, a gentle riffle shuffle can also be used. There is no single correct way to shuffle — consistency and focus matter more than technique.
For a daily single-card draw, shuffle the deck while holding a simple question such as "What should I focus on today?" Draw one card from anywhere in the deck and spend a few minutes with the image and the corresponding guidebook entry. This is a straightforward way to build familiarity with the deck over time.
For a three-card spread, shuffle as usual and draw three cards, placing them left to right to represent past, present, and future. The first card reflects influences or events that have shaped the situation, the second speaks to where things stand right now, and the third points toward likely outcomes or energies ahead.
Keep a dedicated journal nearby when you read. Write down which card you drew, the date, your initial reaction to the image, and any thoughts or feelings that came up. Reviewing past entries can reveal patterns and help you track how the cards have applied to your life over time.
If you are new to oracle cards, let the included guidebook serve as your starting point, but do not feel locked into its interpretation. Pay attention to your first instinct when you see a card — that immediate response is often the most relevant one. The guidebook provides context rooted in the Mahabharata's archetypes and teachings, but your personal connection to the imagery is equally valid.
When not in use, store the deck in its original box or a fabric pouch to keep the cards protected from dust, moisture, and bending. Keeping the deck in a consistent location — such as a shelf, drawer, or meditation space — also helps you build a regular practice around it.
