Hold the tip of the stick to a flame for 10 to 15 seconds, then gently blow out the flame and allow the ember to glow softly, releasing its sacred smoke. Rest the stick securely in a fireproof incense holder placed on a stable, heat-safe surface, and give yourself a moment to arrive fully in your space before your practice begins.
Safety is an essential part of mindful ritual. Always burn incense in a well-ventilated room to allow fresh air to circulate alongside the sacred smoke. Never leave a burning stick unattended, and keep all incense well out of reach of children and pets. Ensure your holder is designed specifically for incense sticks and is positioned away from curtains, paper, fabric, or any other flammable materials. When you are ready to extinguish a stick before it has fully burned, press the lit tip gently against a fireproof surface or dip it briefly into sand or ash — never use water, as this can damage the remaining stick.
