To use your Mountain Sage stick, begin by opening a window or door to allow fresh air to circulate through your space — good ventilation helps the smoke move freely and keeps the air comfortable while you work. Hold the tip of the bundle over a flame, such as a lighter or candle, until it catches and begins to glow. Once it is lit, gently blow out the flame so the bundle smolders and produces a steady stream of smoke. Always hold or rest your sage stick over a heat-safe dish, abalone shell, or ceramic bowl throughout your practice to catch any falling embers and protect your surfaces. Never leave a burning bundle unattended, and keep it well away from children, pets, curtains, and any flammable materials.
Once your bundle is smoldering, slowly walk through your space holding it at a comfortable height. Guide the smoke into corners, along walls, near doorways, and into any areas that feel heavy or stagnant — these spots tend to hold on to old energy and benefit most from a deliberate, mindful pass. Move at a relaxed pace and let the smoke drift naturally rather than rushing through each room. When you are finished, press the lit end firmly into sand, salt, or a fireproof dish to fully extinguish the bundle. Do not use water to put it out, as this can damage the bundle for future use. Store it in a cool, dry place between uses.
