To begin, find a calm moment and open a window or door nearby to allow fresh air to circulate while you work with the smoke. Hold the stick at a slight angle over a heat-safe bowl, ceramic dish, or abalone shell, and use a lighter or match to ignite the tip. Once the end catches flame, gently blow it out so the herbs begin to smolder and release their fragrant, minty-herbal smoke. Keep your heat-safe surface beneath the stick at all times to catch any falling ash, and never leave a lit or smoldering stick unattended. Keep the stick well away from children, pets, curtains, paper, and any other flammable materials throughout your ritual.
With your stick smoldering, slowly move through your home or workspace, guiding the smoke into corners, along walls, around doorways, and into any areas that feel heavy or stagnant. You can use your hand, a feather, or a small fan to direct the smoke intentionally. The bright, minty scent of peppermint and lemon balm is especially well suited for morning routines, work areas, or any space where you want to shift the energy and invite a sense of mental freshness and focus.
