Hold the bundle at one end and light the opposite tip with a match or lighter, allowing it to catch for several seconds before gently blowing out the flame. You should see a steady ember and a thin trail of smoke rising from the bundle. Always hold it over or near a heat-safe dish or abalone shell as you move through your space to catch any falling ash. Never leave a burning bundle unattended, keep it well away from children, pets, and anything flammable, and always make sure it is fully extinguished when you are done — pressing it firmly into sand or a heat-safe bowl of earth is a reliable method.
