To begin working with your Universal Waite® Pocket Tarot, hold the deck in your hands for a few moments before shuffling. This helps you settle your focus and bring a specific question or intention to mind before you draw.

There are a few ways to shuffle the deck. The overhand method works well for smaller pocket-sized decks — simply move small sections of cards from one hand to the other in a relaxed, continuous motion. You can also use the cut method, dividing the deck into two or three piles and reassembling them in a different order. Repeat whichever method feels comfortable until you feel ready to draw.

For a daily single-card draw, shuffle the deck while focusing on the question: What do I need to be aware of today? Draw one card and spend a few minutes looking at the imagery before consulting the included booklet. This is a simple and effective way to build familiarity with the deck over time.

For a three-card spread, shuffle the deck and lay three cards face down from left to right. Turn them over one at a time. The first card represents the past, the second represents the present, and the third represents the future or a potential outcome. This spread is useful when you want a broader look at a situation.

Keep a dedicated notebook nearby to record your card pulls. Write down the card name, the position it was drawn in, and your immediate impressions before looking anything up. Over time, your notes will show patterns and help you develop a stronger personal connection to the cards.

If you are new to tarot, use the included 36-page booklet as a starting point, but do not rely on it exclusively. The imagery in the Universal Waite deck is detailed and expressive — trust what you notice and what comes to mind when you look at a card. Your instinctive response is a valid part of the reading.
