To begin, find a quiet moment and bring a clear intention to mind — whether you're looking to shift the energy in your home, support a meditation session, or mark the beginning of a new personal practice. Hold the stick at a slight downward angle and light the tip using a lighter or match, allowing it to catch for several seconds before gently blowing out the flame. Once you see a steady ember and ribbon of smoke rising, you're ready to move through your space. Walk slowly and mindfully, directing the smoke along walls, into corners, and around doorways, paying extra attention to areas that feel heavy or stagnant. Allow the smoke to linger in spaces where you want to invite in grounding, protective energy.
Always burn your sage stick over or near a heat-safe surface such as an abalone shell, ceramic dish, or fire-safe bowl to catch any falling ash or embers. Keep a window or door slightly open to allow energy — and smoke — to move out of the space, and never leave a burning stick unattended. Keep the stick well away from curtains, paper, and other flammable materials, and ensure it is out of reach of children and pets at all times. When you're finished, press the lit end firmly into sand or a heat-safe dish to fully extinguish it — do not use water, as this can make it harder to relight for future use. Store in a cool, dry place between uses.
