Hold one end of the bundle and use a match or lighter to ignite the tip, allowing it to catch a small flame before gently blowing it out so it smolders and produces a steady stream of smoke. Rest the burning bundle in a heat-safe dish, abalone shell, or ceramic bowl filled with sand or salt to catch any falling ash. Never leave a lit bundle unattended, keep it well away from children, pets, and any flammable materials, and always make sure the bundle is fully extinguished after use by pressing the lit end firmly into your heat-safe dish.

To work with the smudge stick for energy clearing, move slowly through your space holding the smoldering bundle, guiding the smoke into corners, doorways, and along the walls where stagnant or heavy energy tends to settle. You can use your hand or a feather to gently direct the smoke as you move through each room. Starting at the front door and working in a deliberate path through your home is a simple and effective approach. When you are finished, return to your starting point and allow the bundle to rest and extinguish safely in your dish.
